It seems Paisley is willing to take a risk with his single choices, or at least with this one. Thematically, this song is much closer to “I Can’t Change the World” than it is to “River Bank.” It’s a much better song than “River Bank” as well. Substantively, there’s more here than in his last single. It’s definitely one of the best tracks off of Moonshine.
A balance needs to be struck. This is a song that could, overall, contribute to adding substance back to country radio. But at the same time, Paisley seems to try to make the song still appeal to a mass crowd by making parts of it as loud as possible rather than letting the music and the words speak for themselves.
I’d probably give the song 4.5 stars if it weren’t for the overdone production, but even as one of the best tracks off of the CD, I’m giving it a rating on-par with my rating of the album as a whole.
