I’m not sure what it’s been with Lady Antebellum lately. Golden, despite a few excellent tracks, was a very subpar from the album from the group after Own the Night which I felt was a great pop country album. The first single off of Golden was “Downtown,” and much like “Bartender” as the first single off of their upcoming release 747, it was a departure from the sound that made them likeable in the first place. And the song was downright unlikeable, just like “Bartender.”
And that’s what “I Did With You” is…good pop country. Ten years ago it’s probably what would have been classified as “easy listening.” The song features strong harmonies and it’s very melody-focused. The song isn’t trying to be something it’s not, nor is the band. And perhaps that has something to with the soundtrack for which the song is produced. A Nicholas Sparks movie hardly seems like the place you’d hear a song with the style of “Bartender” (but then again, I’m hardly an expert on Nicholas Sparks movies, so…).
Unfortunately this song will not be on 747. And if you look on iTunes, the second song available for download from the album is called “Freestyle” and it’s just as bad as “Bartender,” if not worse. It’s not giving me a lot of confidence in their new album. Which makes it all the more a shame that this is just a soundtrack song and is listed as a “Promotional Single.” Will it get any radio airplay? Hopefully, as it’s better than a lot of what the group has offered as of late.
