This is a decent album and better than what is being played on mainstream country radio. You do hear electric guitar throughout the record but you also hear organ, steel pedal and a lot of acoustic guitar, which is quite refreshing. But after listening to his previous output, he can do better. Scott just needs better written material. I give this album 3.5 out of 5.
Posted by: Troy Today's album review of Ray Scott's album is written by reader/guest critic, Troy. Thanks Troy for reading and contributing! Howdy folks. My name is Troy & your good friend Cobra asked me if I'd like to take a stab and review Ray Scott's self-titled album. For people not familiar with Ray Scott, he has written songs for Randy Travis ("Pray for the Fish") & Clay Walker ("A Few Questions") and released his debut album on Warner Bros in 2005 called My Kind of Music. Or you may know him by the song "Those Jeans." He left Warner Bros years ago, continued to release his albums independently. Earlier this year, he teamed up with Nashville producer Dave Brainard to form their own label deciBel Nashville & this album is one of those efforts. Upon hearing Scott's voice, I was immediately reminded of Trace Adkins. Both share the same love for the spoken word and baritone vocals. Which isn't a bad thing at all. Scott's album kicks off with the rockin' song "Cookin." You would think it's about actual cooking, but not even close, not with lyrics like "she ain't cookin' in the kitchen." FGL, you idiots take note because this is innuendo done right. The song sounds sexy without sounding skeevy. He slows down the tempo with the next song "Ain't Always Thirsty", which is isn't a bad song but he can do better, considering his previous records. Several songs that stand out are "Tijuana Buzzkill" and the hilarious "The Ugly One" (which is about taking one for the team. Fellas, you know exactly what I'm talking about), where Ray talks about taking the ugly one and likening her to Atilla the Hun.
