That said, it's not just the songwriting that makes "She Don't Drink Whiskey Anymore" such a compelling listen. It's also the production, which packs a punch while staying permanently planted within the roots of country music. It's the poignant melody, which possesses slight nuances that fit appropriately with the narrators mood. Most of all, it's Hicks' heartfelt performance in which he sounds like he's on the verge of breaking down at any moment. While some may scoff at this comparison, "She Don't Drink Whiskey Anymore" is the kind of song that Americana star Jason Isbell would record, from the vocal to the in-depth lyrical content. This record is the whole package, and the best single to come out of Canada in years.
Posted by: Markus Whatever impression you may have got from Tim Hicks' debut album Throwdown, that he's a one-trick pony or that he's yet another in a long line of generic bro-artists, will quickly be erased after listening to his sophomore project 5:01. 5:01 is a diverse, balanced album that shows development in Hicks' artistry, and no track, aside from the brilliant duet with Madeline Merlo titled "Ready To Say Goodnight", proves this more than his latest Canadian hit "She Don't Drink Whiskey Anymore". This absolute masterpiece of a single shows the narrator mourning not necessarily the loss of a relationship, but the fact that the woman depicted throughout the lyric no longer feels remorse, and thus, not drinking whiskey anymore. It's a brilliant, thoughtful lyric that perfectly conveys the feelings of the narrator without coming across as sappy or insincere.
