Posted by: Cobra Number 17 on my list of Top 20 Films is a 1993 neo-noir thriller Red Rock West. Red Rock West premiered at a film festival to widespread acclaim, but was relegated to a direct-to-cable/direct-to-video release before it ended up receiving an actual theatrical release. At this point, it became ineligible for the many awards that committees wanted to nominate it for due to not having been originally a theatrical feature.

Posted by: Cobra While Jason Eady’s 2016 duets album with his wife Courtney Patton featured a couple of new songs, fans have been eagerly awaiting a new album of the traditionalist since 2014’s masterpiece Daylight and Dark. That day is finally on the horizon with an April 21st release date set for his new self-titled album. And the first taste of that new album is here with the first new song from it, “Why I Left Atlanta.”
Posted by: Cobra Aside from Good Will Hunting, almost all of Ben Affleck’s screenwriting has come in the form of adapting novels into screenplays. That’s not to say that’s a bad thing. Everyone loves a favorite novel turned into a movie. And Affleck happens to be very, very talented at doing it. He has been in the business a long time and he has a very cinematic mind.
Number 18 on my list of Top 20 films is Affleck’s 2010 masterpiece, The Town, originally a novel by Chuck Hogan published under the title Prince of Thieves, and then republished with its title coinciding with the film. Posted by: Cobra Number 19 on my list of Top 20 Films is Gone Baby Gone, a 2007 film based on a novel by Dennis Lehane and starring Casey Affleck, Michelle Monaghan, Morgan Freeman, and Ed Harris, and directed by Ben Affleck who also helped adapt the screenplay from the novel.
Gone Baby Gone is a tightly shot suspense story about a young girl kidnapped from her irresponsible and seemingly uninterested mother. When the kidnapping occurs, the mother seems much more interested in how this all affects her than she does with the safety of her four-year old daughter. Posted by: Cobra This is a piece I’ve been working on for several months as I’ve worked to articulate the words in my head and onto the page. I've actually been working on it since before I changed my format.
Several months back, I had the opportunity to catch up with an old friend and Fraternity Brother who I hadn’t seen in over ten years. My buddy and I have very different tastes in music, but we both respect good music and artistry in music: musicianship and professionalism; talent in the field. Posted by: Cobra Every year a group of friends and I put together our lists of our Top 20 Films. Recently, my friend over at Matt Lynn Digital began posting reviews of these Top 20 Films from his list, and I felt it would be interesting to begin doing the same, posting reviews from Number 20 and count down up to Number 1.
Number 20 on my list of Top 20 Films is The Usual Suspects.

Welcome to the first post at the newly re-formatted Pop Culture Potpourri. Today, I am reviewing the new Ben Affleck film Live By Night.
Critics haven’t been very complimentary of Live By Night, but I seem to have enjoyed it quite a bit more than most of them. Live By Night is based on a book by Dennis Lehane, the same novelist who has written the original works of Mystic River, Gone Baby Gone, and Shutter Island. Unlike many contemporary novelists, Lehane’s works rarely deal solely with pure good versus pure evil. There are often a lot of grey areas involved. Mystic River explored long-term consequences of traumatic events buried deep in our pasts. Gone Baby Gone asked if a wrong action taken for the right reason can be the right choice. After some thought and consideration, I decided I wanted to expand my writing and write on some additional pop culture items, including film/movie reviews, book reviews, more broad opinion pieces, reviews of other genres of music, etc. There will still likely be a big focus on country music when it comes to music reviews, but there will be some additional writing as well. I plan to have a couple of pieces up in the coming days, and I hope you enjoy the new format! |
