I had been lucky enough to hear the song when he performed it live in Cleveland when opening for Eric Church (YouTube Video below, since a lyric video is not yet available). I could tell it was a great song, but we've probably all experienced hearing a song for the first time in a live environment. It can be difficult to fully listen and full appreciate its content. Therefore, it was great to finally hear this song as a studio track.
Dwight's previous album 3 Pears was hailed as a return to form, very much in tune with his early work. In fact, "Second Hand Heart" was originally intended to appear on that album, according to what Yoakam told Rolling Stone. However, it ended up not being completed in time.
And this song gives all indications that the new album will be just as good as 3 Pears. The song is signature Dwight. In the song, Dwight sings of two lovers cautiously attempting to give love another try after each having experienced heartbreak. Everything about the song has Dwight's trademark on it. The Bakersfield, rock-a-billy style style, the unique twang of Dwight's voice, and a true country style.
This is easily one of my own most anticipated albums of the year. I'm counting the days until this arrives in my mailbox.
